PA Law Gives Health Care Consumers Right to Choose
Ligonier, PA - Bethlen Communities in Ligonier introduces 'The
Power in Knowing' series. The aim of this new series is to
offer free programs that bring valuable healthcare
information to the general community.
Living wills and powers of attorney is the subject matter of
the first program in the series. Speaking on the topic will
be Peggy Hooker, Attorney at Law, of Hooker & Broker LLC,
which specializes in Estate & Financial Planning and Elder
Law.
“With the passage of Act 169, for the first time
Pennsylvania law gives health care consumers a right to
grant a comprehensive health care power of attorney to a
trusted family member or friend who can make medical
decisions for them when they are incapacitated,” Hooker
noted.
The program is ideal for those who are new to the concept of
living wills, currently have or are a power of attorney, or
want to ensure their wishes are followed.
“We’re finding that some families of residents at our
skilled nursing facility are not aware of the differences
between a healthcare agent and a general power of attorney,”
Michael Walker, nursing home administrator, said. “We’d like
to bring more awareness about the topic to them and to our
local community.”
Understanding the often overlooked distinctions could save
an individual from having to deal with problems down the
road, Walker added.
The event is Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Bethlen
Home in Ligonier.
